Relationship of roots and coefficients of a quadratic

The roots in polynomials are closely linked to the coefficients of that polynomial.

Sum of roots

If pp and qq are roots of ax2+bx+c=0ax^2+bx+c=0, then p+q=bap+q=-\frac ba.

This means that the sum of roots of a quadratic is equal to ba-\frac ba.

Product of roots

If pp and qq are roots of ax2+bx+c=0ax^2+bx+c=0, then p×q=cap\times q=\frac ca (positive).

Evaluating other expressions

The equation 7x22x+1=07x^2-2x+1=0 has roots pp and qq. Evaluate 1p+1q\frac1p+\frac1q
